Our community is growing, and we are too! We’re in a rough spot, like a kid that needs a bigger bed; we’re outgrowing our space. The current station does not meet modern operational needs for space, technology, secure evidence handling, or private/confidential interactions with the public. We want to prioritize keeping our community safe, but we need some more space to do it. That’s why we’re proposing a bond for a new facility.

During our January survey, we heard that one of our community’s primary concerns was property tax impact/affordability.  That’s why we’ve created a page dedicated to how your property taxes support the City, County, and School systems. Knowing where your money goes keeps us all better informed. For more finance info about the bond, visit: https://www.rexburg.org/o/cor/page/bond-tax-calculator

Spotlight on Property Taxes: Where do my property taxes go?
Spotlight on Property Taxes: Property values are determined by the county tax assessor. They’re based on: Your property's assessed value & Budgets of local taxing districts to provide community services
Spotlight on Property Taxes: Idaho law limits how much property tax revenue can increase each year to 3%. This is designed to cover: • Inflation • Ongoing services • Smaller capital needs Thus, Idaho Law allows for separate funding sources for large projects, like new facilities or major infrastructure updates. These funds can include: Voter-approved bonds Levies Local Improvement Districts (LIDs) Idaho State Law (Idaho Code 63-802) legislature.idaho.gov/statutesrules/idstat/title63/t63ch8/sect63-802
Spotlight on Property Taxes: For Rexburg City residents, Property taxes are divided between several local taxing districts, including: Madison County - 45.9% Cities (like Rexburg) - 30.8% Madison School District - 18.3% Library District - 4.6% Cemetery - 0.3% Idaho State Law (Idaho Code 63-802) legislature.idaho.gov/statutesrules/idstat/title63/t63ch8/sect63-802
Spotlight on Property Taxes: How are my property taxes divided? As Rexburg is in Madison County, city residents pay a portion of taxes to both the city and the county. Tax bills are paid directly to Madison County, and the funds are distributed appropriately. rexburg.org/o/cor/page/property-taxes
Spotlight on Property Taxes: How does the City spend the taxes? The City of Rexburg uses property tax funds for Police, Fire, and Parks & Recreation. rexburg.org/o/cor/page/property-taxes
Spotlight on Property Taxes: What is the Police Budget used for? The Police Department accounts for 7.34% ($8.17 million) of the City’s total annual budget. Property taxes account for about half of this amount. This budget funds: 48 full-time Police officers and staff Operational costs like: Vehicle service equipment Radios & communication needs Computer & reporting systems Safety equipment Training rexburg.org/o/cor/page/budget-reports

❄️ We waited. We hoped. We refreshed the forecast.
Still no snow. (And now our Recreation crew is side-eyeing our Streets crew for that wish they made to Santa last month.) 👀

Without winter conditions, Winterfest won’t take place this year, but we already have some big plans in mind for our 2027 event!

Thanks for understanding, and we’ll see you next year… when winter will hopefully decide to show up. ⛄😉

Rexburg...we have a confession to make...
Earlier this month, we asked our Streets crews for their Christmas wish from Santa, and their wish...was for no snow. 🤦🤷
True story. So we’re prepared to blame them for the lack of white stuff on the ground this Christmas. 🚫❄️🚫

However, not wanting snow (or having it) doesn’t mean they’re not preparing for the next storm. Every winter storm in Rexburg is different, and so is the City’s
response. Snow removal depends on weather conditions, timing, snow accumulation, traffic conditions, and the availability of equipment and crews. To help residents better understand how winter street operations work, the City Communications Team spoke with both frontline crews and City leadership. We'll be sharing snippets on our socials throughout the season, but we invite you to check out the full discussion in the "News" section on Rexburg.org.

The City of Rexburg is grateful to have been awarded a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation! This grant empowers communities to prevent serious traffic injuries and fatalities for everyone, regardless of age or ability. With it, we're crafting a Safety Action Plan to pinpoint roadway safety concerns, and we want YOUR input!

Rexburg’s Public Works Team is committed to adopting the USDOT’s Safe Systems Approach, which designs roads to accommodate for human errors. This goal also aligns with the national "Vision Zero" movement, which strives to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries.

Safety is a collective responsibility shared by drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, the City, and first responders. This approach emphasizes Safe Roads, Safe Speeds, Safe People, and robust Post-Crash Care. Whether you walk, bike, drive, or use a wheelchair, we need YOUR insight!
We welcome your thoughts through our new Safe Streets for All Survey to tell us which changes you believe will best protect our community!
