Featured Construction Updates
Below are the City of Rexburg's 2024 construction season plans.
Please plan accordingly for possible congestion, detours, or delays in traffic in these areas during construction.
The following projects have tentative start dates. Project length depends on several factors as 3rd party contractors are working on these projects. Please note that contractors operate on their own timelines so things may happen faster or slower than anticipated.
UPDATE: 11/20/2024: LID 53 – Barney Dairy, 4th East, and North Hill Roads
All construction has been completed except sidewalk work which will be finished as soon as crews are able.
UPDATE 11/20/2024: Trejo/S. Yellowstone Hwy Traffic Signal Improvements
The project is on hold until the power company can relocate the necessary power lines.
UPDATE 11/20/2024: Temple Project: Includes 2nd E, north of Moody Rd.
This multi-year project will include intermittent infrastructure updates. During the winter season, construction will mostly be paused. Still, we ask the public to remain aware and cautious of potential work in the area. Temporary traffic diversions may be utilized for construction vehicles and workers present.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not an all-inclusive list of projects that may occur in Rexburg for the 2024 season. Other infrastructure projects may also create road closures or restrictions. The city will work to keep residents informed via social media, our website, and on-street signage. We appreciate your patience during this very productive construction season.
The City has compiled an informational webpage about the interchanges and other traffic-effecting road construction plans for the summer of 2024. We hope you find it helpful in planning your routes in the coming months!
2024 ITD Interchange Projects
In the Spring of 2024, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will begin work on Rexburg's 3 interchanges along Highway 20. The south and central exits will each be getting Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDIs) while the North interchange will be receiving a permanent light signal. Work on the DDI projects will begin in March and is anticipated to last through October. Each of the two interchanges is slated for TWO SEPARATE CLOSURES, each lasting approximately 6 weeks. The first closure is scheduled to begin on the SOUTH INTERCHANGE in mid to late June.
11/21/2024 UPDATE:
The South and Central exits remain under minor construction as crews wrap up the interchange projects for the winter season. At this time, both lanes of traffic remain open throughout all areas with short-term closures temporarily being utilized to expedite the process prior to snow fall. Cosmetic updates and signage are planned to complete this project.
9/10/2024 UPDATE:
Highway 20 Exit 333 will re-open Thursday, 9/12/2024, at night with a new diverging diamond interchange in place. This exit has been closed since late July so the Idaho Transportation Department and contractors could construct the new road design and complete vital underground infrastructure work. The re-opening comes in time for an increase of traffic as university students arrive in Rexburg for the fall semester. All lanes of traffic will be open and construction efforts remain off the roadway at both Exit 332 (University Boulevard) and Exit 333 (Main Street) through [move-in] weekend to accommodate this influx.
Motorists and citizens should be aware that construction efforts will continue again next week and through the month of October. Intermittent single-lane closures will be in place, with traffic still able to move through the interchanges. Impacts will be noted on 511.idaho.gov.
The University Boulevard Exit will fully close again during the week of September 30 through October 4 to allow crews to add a final layer of pavement. This timeframe has been selected in coordination with when Madison School District is out of school for harvest break. Work on both exits is on track to be completed late this Fall. For further details about this project and to watch a video on how to drive the new diverging diamond traffic pattern, visit itdprojects.idaho.gov/pages/us20rexburg.
7/18/2024 UPDATE:
Exit 333 (the Central Exit) has been rescheduled to close a week in advance of it's initial proposed closure date. The exit will now close on Monday, 7/22/2024 for a planned 6-week full closure.
Press release from ITD reads: "The Main Street Exit for Rexburg on U.S. Highway 20 will fully close beginning next Monday. The closure at Exit 333 will allow the Idaho Transportation Department to efficiently construct a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) like the one now operating at University Boulevard (Exit 332). The closure is expected to last through the month of August.
All ramps at Exit 333, as well as Main Street between the ramps, will be closed to traffic and detoured to nearby interchanges. Through traffic on US-20 will be unaffected during construction.
Detours include Thornton (Exit 328), University Boulevard (Exit 332), and North Rexburg (Exit 337). A new permanent traffic signal will be in place and operating to aid the flow of traffic at the North Rexburg Exit prior to this closure. One-lane closures are in effect at the University Boulevard Exit while construction efforts continue there."
7/3/2024 UPDATE:
Exit 332 (the South exit) is back OPEN! Workers will continue to be present at the interchange as there is still much construction to do. The traffic signal that will direct the diverging diamond flow of traffic at this new interchange has been commissioned. Paving is ongoing as they are laying the first “lift” of pavement and a second lift of pavement will still need to be completed after the exit is reopened.
As such, occassional lane closures will still need to happen around the Exit 332 interchange throughout the rest of the summer. One lane of traffic in each direction will stay open even during these times.
** Drivers should familiarize themselves with Diverging Diamond Interchange procedures post-haste! See information on this page below, and on our DDI page.
Exit 333 (the Central exit) is expected to close on July 29th, 2024 for its own 6 week construction period; we hope it will be reopen by Labor Day weekend. Estimated completion of both interchanges (meaning no workers on site) is October, 2024.
6/11/2024 UPDATE:
Work is moving along steadily on the South Rexburg interchange and ITD hopes to have the interchange open by the end of the month. Follow us on social media to be sure you have all the necessary information about how to use DDI's as they will soon be in regular use here in Rexburg!
Prep-work on the central interchange is starting to take place and traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction intermittently. Full closure of this interchange is expected to take place in July.
5/23/2024 UPDATE:
ITD has announced the closure of the South Rexburg interchange will begin on 5/29/2024! The full closure will be in effect for one month. The interchange is expected to reopen by the Fourth of July. Traffic will be diverted to the Tereton or Central Interchanges, but be advised that active construction has begun on the Central Interchange; plan for delays. See our Diverging Diamond Interchange page for additional information.
