Featured Construction Updates

Below are the City of Rexburg's 2024 construction season plans for the upcoming months.

Please plan accordingly for possible congestion, detours, or delays in traffic in these areas during construction.

The following projects have tentative start dates. Project length is dependent on several factors as 3rd party contractors are working on these projects. Please note that contractors operate on their own timelines so things may happen faster or slower than anticipated.

  • 2024 Slurry Seal project is slated to begin in July, following the start of BYUI's 7-week break.

There are no known start dates for the following projects. but they are slated for the 2024 construction season. Work may be done by various entities from City staff to 3rd party bid-and-approved contractors.

  • Sunrise Sewer Project: The project consists of the construction of a new sanitary sewer mainline from Sunrise Drive to University Blvd. The project will include all the typical road and native ground repairs necessary to install a new gravity sewer with manholes.

    • 6/11/2024: Bids have been collected for this project, but it has not been awarded to a contractor at this time.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not an all-inclusive list of projects that may occur in Rexburg for the 2024 season. Other infrastructure projects may also create road closures or restrictions. The city will work to keep residents informed via social media, our website, and on-street signage. We appreciate your patience during this very productive construction season.

The City has compiled an informational webpage about the interchanges and other traffic-effecting road construction plans for the summer of 2024. We hope you find it helpful in planning your routes in the coming months!

2024 ITD Interchange Projects

In the Spring of 2024, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will begin work on Rexburg's 3 interchanges along Highway 20. The south and central exits will each be getting Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDIs) while the North interchange will be receiving a permanent light signal. Work on the DDI projects will begin in March and is anticipated to last through October. Each of the two interchanges is slated for TWO SEPARATE CLOSURES, each lasting approximately 6 weeks. The first closure is scheduled to begin on the SOUTH INTERCHANGE in mid to late June.

7/3/2024 UPDATE:

Exit 332 (the South exit) is back OPEN! Workers will continue to be present at the interchange as there is still much construction to do. The traffic signal that will direct the diverging diamond flow of traffic at this new interchange has been commissioned. Paving is ongoing as they are laying the first “lift” of pavement and a second lift of pavement will still need to be completed after the exit is reopened.

As such, occassional lane closures will still need to happen around the Exit 332 interchange throughout the rest of the summer. One lane of traffic in each direction will stay open even during these times.

** Drivers should familiarize themselves with Diverging Diamond Interchange procedures post-haste! See information on this page below, and on our DDI page.

Exit 333 (the Central exit) is expected to close on July 29th, 2024 for its own 6 week construction period; we hope it will be reopen by Labor Day weekend. Estimated completion of both interchanges (meaning no workers on site) is October, 2024.

6/11/2024 UPDATE:

Work is moving along steadily on the South Rexburg interchange and ITD hopes to have the interchange open by the end of the month. Follow us on social media to be sure you have all the necessary information about how to use DDI's as they will soon be in regular use here in Rexburg!

Prep-work on the central interchange is starting to take place and traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction intermittently. Full closure of this interchange is expected to take place in July.

5/23/2024 UPDATE:

ITD has announced the closure of the South Rexburg interchange will begin on 5/29/2024! The full closure will be in effect for one month. The interchange is expected to reopen by the Fourth of July. Traffic will be diverted to the Tereton or Central Interchanges, but be advised that active construction has begun on the Central Interchange; plan for delays. See our Diverging Diamond Interchange page for additional information.

Preparation for the new Rexburg LDS Temple

With the announcement of a new LDS Temple going in on the North end of 2nd E (through Moody Rd), many infrastructure improvements have been slated for the summer along that route that will be affecting traffic on that road. Projects include:

  • Sewer & water upgrades

  • Widening of 2nd E to a 5-lane road

  • Signal upgrade at the North HWY 20 interchange

  • Curb and gutter upgrades

Work has already begun in this area and is expected to last throughout the entire summer.
