The commissioned police officer is responsible for the protection of life and property, prevention and investigation of crimes, apprehension of criminals, general enforcement of laws and ordinances, and the upholding of the Constitution of the United States and the State of Idaho in protecting the rights and liberties of the citizens and all those within the City of Rexburg. Our officers are required to know and understands the streets, addresses, and layout of the city. They must train and qualify in fields such as Firearms, Less Lethal, and Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC). As well as attended a minimum of 40 hours of updated training every two years.

How to Become a Police Officer in the City of Rexburg
After meeting all the requirements listed on the job description and submitting an application there is a three step interview process. The first step is a Physical Readiness Test where the physical abilities of the applicant is put to the test to ensure they are able to handle the physical requirements of being a police officer. If the applicant passes this first step they will then move to a written exam which will cover language, memory, ethics, general mathematics, and decision making. If a passing grade is achieved the applicant will move to the final step of an Oral Board Interview.

An offer of employment with a probation period of one-year is extended to the applicant chosen. The applicant then must pass an extensive background check, Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA), and a psychological evaluation completed by a licensed and contracted professional.

Mini Academy and Field Training
Newly hired officers spend their first 16 weeks learning the skills required to become a patrol officer. The first two weeks are spent completing trainings and qualifications required to be an officer out on the road. After going through a 2 week Mini Academy they are paired with field training officers (FTOs) for a minimum of 14 weeks. Once completing training and graduating from Peace Officer Standards and Training Basic Patrol Academy these officers will join our force as fully certified officers.
