Water Safety

The Hard Facts About Drowning

  • Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among children between 1 and 4 years old.

  • Idaho is the second leading state for childhood drownings.

  • Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children 19 and under.

  • Children less than a year old are more likely to drown at home in the bathtub or a bucket and can drown with less than 1" of water present.

Canal Safety: The Idaho Water Users Association (IWUA) reminds all Idaho residents that canals are private property and should NEVER be used for recreation! While they often look peaceful, canals are extremely dangerous and difficult to get out of. Not only is the water cold and swift, but the concrete walls are usually very steep and over time become muddy and covered in slime. This becomes not only hazardous for you, but for the swift water rescue teams who are tasked with getting you out safely. It’s important that all Idaho residents, particularly our children, understand the dangers associated with canals. Make sure to keep an eye on your kids when near canals.
