For Drivers:
For drivers, "share the road" begins with understanding that pedestrians and bicyclists also have rights to use the road. Pedestrians and bicyclists also face safety challenges, such as being smaller and less visible. Look for cyclists and pedestrians where vehicles do not appear, like before making a left-hand turn, at crosswalks, and at intersections.
Drivers, remember these helpful safety tips:
Don't drive distracted!
Always slow down and be prepared to stop for pedestrians when they’re in a crosswalk.
Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk, as there may be people crossing whom you can’t see.
Be extra cautious when backing up across sidewalks or in parking lots.
Follow the speed limit, especially around people on the street, in school zones, and in neighborhoods where children are present.
For Pedestrians, Bicyclists, and Motorists
Just like vehicle drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians must obey signs and signals - they are there to protect you! Cyclists should ride defensively, assuming others cannot see you. All road users should avoid distractions including music, electronic devices, or anything else that takes focus off the road. Bicyclists should always ride with traffic, use bike lanes when available, and avoid riding on sidewalks when possible.
Pedestrians! Remember these helpful safety tips:
Avoid distractions when using the road!
Pedestrians should make eye contact with drivers before you cross the street.
Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right.
Continue watching for traffic as you cross the street.
Always cross streets at crosswalks when they are available; drivers know to look for you there.
If there isn’t a crosswalk, cross at a well-lit place where drivers can best see you.
