Adopt a Storm Drain

Clear drains, clean waterways, healthy community. You can make a difference.

The City of Rexburg has over 1,000 storm drains. Maintenance on these proves to be a massive undertaking and lack of maintenance creates issues such as flooding, pollution of our waterways, and damage to our roads. The City makes an effort to maintain all of those drains, but due to limited resources, the City is unable to attend to each drain before and after each weather event.

You can help!

By volunteering to adopt a storm drain in your area, you're committing a small amount of your time to keep the drain clear of debris and/or reporting any noticeable issues to the City to address.

WHY YOU SHOULD PARTICIPATE:

  • The adoption process is a simple way to make a big contribution to your neighborhood and our community.

  • You'll help keep our local lakes, rivers, and creeks clear of pollutants.

  • You'll help prevent unnecessary damage to our roadways.

WHAT YOU'RE PARTICIPATING IN:

  1. You'll monitor the drain regularly, especially after weather events to keep it clear of any debris such as leaves, ice, trash, etc.,

  2. Report any other issues like damages or contamination to City crews.

Drain Cleaning Tips

  • Rainwater and snow melt are the only things that should enter storm drains.

  • Never remove the grate from the drain.

  • Cleaning the gutters around the drains helps to prevent future buildup.

  • Do not reach or put anything into the storm drain.

    • Call City crews to remove something inside the drain.

  • Salt is nearly impossible to remove from waterways; use sparingly for deicing.

  • Remove/shovel excess snow buildup from around the drain grate.

If you will no longer be participating in keeping your storm drain, please contact us.
