Residential Building Permit Application Process

The process of obtaining a building permit can seem complex. This page is designed to break the process into easy steps. Before beginning the process, please download this brochure from the International Code Council and read it. For any questions during the process, please contact the permit technician.

Step 1: Determine if you need a permit

Question mark

The best way to determine if you need a permit is to contact the Building and Safety Department. Please call the permit technician before calling the building inspector. Even if you don't need a permit, the building inspector will be able to answer construction questions and provide valuable advice. Additionally, the International Building Code (IBC) has guidelines on which projects need building permits and which are exempt. Click here for Section 105 "Permits" of the IBC.

Step 2: Contact the Building Inspector about                code compliance

The building inspector is trained in the up-to-date codes which your construction project is required to follow. You will find the building inspector contact information in the right-hand column.

Step 3: Fill out an application and submit it

Application

All of the forms are available online. They can be filled out in a PDF reader and then submitted via email. Additionally, the forms can be printed, filled out, and submitted at Rexburg City Hall.

Additional Steps

Once a building permit application has been submitted, it will be reviewed by the staff of the Building and Safety Department. If the permit is approved, the permit technician will contact you to guide you further in the process of paying fees, submitting plans, and scheduling inspections.
