Permits

  • Do I need a building permit?
    • The 2012 International Building Code (IBC) requires that "any owner or authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by this code, or to cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the building official and obtain the required permit."(2012 IBC) There are exemptions which can be found, along with the entire section on permits, here.

  • Do I need a permit to put up a fence in my yard?
    • No. However, the fence must meet city set back requirements. Those can be found here. If the requirements are not met, the owner will be required to move the fence at his or her own expense. To avoid any confusion, please contact the Code Enforcement office before beginning your construction project.

  • Do I need a permit to put up a temporary banner or sign?
    • Yes. There is no cost for such a permit, but a permit is required. The application form is found here. Set back requirements for signs must be met and are found here. To avoid any confusion, please contact the Code Enfrocement office before you put up your sign. Once your temporary sign permit is approved, you will be notified and then you are free to put up your sign for the allowable time period.

Planning and Zoning

  • What is the zoning of a particular property? What are the restrictions in the zone?
    • Go to madison.rexburg.org Click on Continue to Parcel Map and a large map of Madison County will appear. On the left side of the screen, there is a menu labeled Layers. Select Aerial Photos and check the Rexburg 2012 Color option. Then select the Planning menu. Select Zoning and Zoning Label. Finally, on the top of the webpage, select the icon Search with the binoculars. Type in the physical address of the property without city, state, or zip code indicators. The map may give you several options from which to choose. Choose the correct address by double-clicking on the correct option. Remember or write down the three letter identifier that appears over the property or properties of the same color zoning. The City of Rexburg Development Code contains comprehensive information about each zone type. Click here to access the development code.

Code Enforcement

  • Where can I put a garage sale sign?
    • You cannot place garage sale signs on utility poles or traffic poles. It is recommended that you use a small box on a street corner for a sign. Weight it down with a heavy object to keep the box from blowing into an intersection or road. The box must not obstruct the flow of pedestrian traffic. You are required to pick up each box at the end of the day.
